Asheville, NC Pop Photo Mentor Series Trek with Tamara Lackey

I am leading my third Popular Photography Magazine Mentor Series Trek Friday, May 19 – Sunday, May 21, 2017, in nearby (to me) Asheville, NC. For this photo-based adventure, we will be exploring the beauty of North Carolina from the Craggy Mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway to the City of Asheville, including a stop at the stunning Biltmore Estate.

My previous treks, one in Tuscon and one at Mt. Rainer were wonderful experiences …

Trek Highlights

“This May, receive expert advice from Nikon Ambassador Tamara Lackey and Nikon photographer Mark Alberhasky, as they help you learn how to capture the history, the culture, the city lights, and the natural beauty of Asheville through your lens.

Experience a trip to the Craggy Mountains via the famous Blue Ridge Parkway. Hike on elevated terrain to capture the wonders of the Craggy Garden trail, whish is famous for its abundance of twisted hardwood trees, pink and purple rhododendron blossoms, its health bald, and for providing magnificent vantage points to photograph from.

Discover the history of the Craggy Mountain Train Line, where you will have the opportunity to photograph models on train cars that have been restored and preserved. In the evening capture the city lights of downtown Asheville.

We will travel to the nearby Cherokee tribal land to photograph their traditional dance, basket weaving, and pottery making. A photo walk through the Oconaluftee Indian Village allows you capture traditional life in a Cherokee village circa 1760. You can interact with the villagers to get one of a kind shots!

Your experience on Cherokee tribal land will continue with a trip to the magnificent Mingo Falls. Also known as “Big Bear” falls, the water cascades 120 feet to rock below; it is one of the tallest waterfalls in the area. A short hike will allow you to photograph the falls from this vantage point.

The final stop will be Mingus Mill in the Smoky Mountains National Park. Constructed in 1886, it is a notable “grist” mill not only for its rustic beauty, but because it is run by a water-fueled turbine. Here you can practice the milky water technique.

A top tourist attraction in Asheville, the Biltmore estate was commissioned by George Vanderbilt in the 19th century; its photo opportunities include the Biltmore House, gardens, a conservatory, a farm, and a winery.

Come join us in Asheville!”
