with Matt Kloskowski and Tamara Lackey

November 7-13, 2020

The ON1 Destination Workshop in Queenstown, New Zealand, sponsored by ON1, will be led by Matt Kloskowski and Tamara Lackey. This all-inclusive 7-day and 6-night immersion into photography, exploration, and education is an incredible opportunity that you won’t want to miss!

This premium photography workshop will be based out of the beautiful Kamana Lakehouse, which is the highest-situated hotel in Queenstown. Of course we will do a whole lot more than that!

This workshop will focus on landscape, portrait and excursion-based photography, which will include outings to a variety of stunning locations  There will also be daily ON1 post-processing clinics, lab time and photo reviews, with plenty of time all week long for questions, conversations and detailed learning experiences.

As an all-inclusive workshop, all participants will stay in private rooms with a view – and ensuite bathrooms in this premium location that is all about elegant comfort. . All transportation and meals are, of course, included, as well. Expect full breakfasts, lunches, traditional afternoon tea – and sumptuous dinners out at a variety of Queenstowns’ finest restaurants. Workshop participants are welcome to bring companions along, as well – there will be a variety of activities available nearby to enjoy for the entire week while the workshop is underway.

Matt Kloskowski

Matt is a guy that hates bios written in the third person. He…no wait … I… love teaching and photography :-) In that order. I feel that enjoying photography, and photo editing can get WAY too complicated. So my personal mission (and favorite thing to do), is to create education that simplifies the process of taking great photos, and how to edit them to get the results you’ve always wanted. I’m also very honored to be included in the Photoshop Hall of Fame, and author of over 15 books on photo-editing (Lightroom & Photoshop) and photography.

Tamara Lackey

Tamara is a Nikon USA Ambassador, professional photographer, author – and an individual very comfortable with third person bios. Her authentic photography, from portraits to travel photography, is featured in a myriad of major media outlets. Tamara has been teaching photography workshops for over ten years, and her recent focus includes shooting commercial assignments, primarily camera and lensing marketing campaigns, which has included a presentation of her work at the global launch of Nikon’s mirrorless system in Tokyo. She is also the host of The Chasing Frames Show, broadcast via PBS.org and a variety of regional television stations.

FAQ’s –

What is the skill level for this workshop?
This workshop is for beginner to intermediate photographers and photo editors. From a photography perspective, you’ll need to know the basics of your camera and understand how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work. We will have plenty of time to help with settings, though, and we will be providing a multitude of tips along the way.
From a photo editing perspective, you should know the basics of organizing your photos and opening photos in your photo editor of choice, as well as basic exposure, toning and color adjustments. We’ll be there to help with anything more than that, as well as teach you new techniques and inspiring ideas for editing your imagery.
What gear will I need?
You’ll need a camera capable of changing aperture and shutter speed (most DSLR or mirrorless cameras will do). You’ll want to have any wide angle lens (anything in the 16 – 50mm range will do), and a zoom lens as well (70-300, 70-200, etc.). If you plan on shooting certain landscapes or night photos you’ll need a tripod. And if you’d like to photograph macro shots, you should consider bringing a macro lens, although some zoom lenses can work for this if you don’t already own one.
For portrait shooting, it is recommended that you bring a flash or just a simple reflector. If bringing a reflector, a 3-in-1 or 5-in-1 reflector would be ideal, although not required.
What is the Classroom and Lab time all about?
Once a day we’ll meet in the classroom to walk through post-processing techniques and to edit photos. Think of it more as “lab” time. We’ll usually edit a few of our photos up on the screen in the beginning to give you a head start – and some inspiration. Then the lab time is yours to edit and have us there to answer any questions you have or give advice on settings or other creative ideas for the photos.
Do I have to know / use ON1 on this workshop?
It is recommended, but you of course can use whatever photo editor you are comfortable using. Matt and Tamara are familiar with most of them and can help you out no matter what software you use. In their presentations, they will be using ON1 and walking through much of what the tools and filters can do. We will also show how you can also use ON1 as part of your Photoshop or Lightroom editing experience.
What type of physical activity will be involved?
This trip is not very intense when it comes to hiking and climbing. We will mostly be on flat ground and very little hiking is involved, though opportunities to hike more will also be available if you choose. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being difficult), we’d give this a 4. You should be able to walk a mile on flat ground. However, most of our photo shoots will not require extensive walking.
We will be walking at times and on some uneven ground. However, no place we take you to is dangerous, and you won’t be climbing rocks or have the need to balance on unsafe terrain.
What will we be mostly photographing?
Everything! This workshop will give you opportunities to stretch your comfort zone and shoot things you may not have photographed before. We’ll be concentrating on landscape and portrait photography (mostly natural light), and posing, subject interaction. One-on-one advice and technical setting suggestions will always be available. We’re staying in a magnificent location, so, needless to say, landscape photography opportunities will be all around  us and a core part of this workshop.

We also want to give you a peek inside of Lake Wakatipu’s smaller details and more intimate photo opportunities, so we’ll be photographing various macro and close up subjects, food – and even a night sky / starscape excursion for those of you who are up for a late night. And the optional sunrise shoots will be rather striking.
The best thing about your guides, and our location, is that we are all flexible. Tamara and Matt have significant photography experience and if, for example, we run into a cloudy night when we try to photograph stars, we’ll always have other opportunities and other nights – and we’ll be there to help make sure you’re getting the type of photos you want from this trip.
Can I bring a family member, spouse, or friend along with me?
Yes! Pricing for a non-workshop participant is $2950. Companions will stay in the same room at Kamana Lakehouse as the workshop participant, or there is an additional fee for a separate room. They would not be receiving instruction or joining us for photography sessions or lab time, but they are welcome to join us for breakfasts and dinners, and all meals are included in the companion price.
In addition, there are a variety of activities and experiences to enjoy not just in the hotel but very nearby, as downtown Queenstown is only minutes away. The Kamana Lakehouse will help to organize activities and transport as preferred.
Companion rate is for staying at Kamana Lakehouse and if staying at another accommodation, contact us to include companion for dinners.
What are the room accommodations?
At Kamana Lodge you will be staying in your own well-appointed private room with a view and an ensuite bathroom. You will not be sharing a room unless you are traveling with a companion.
Can I join the workshop without choosing to stay at Kamana Lodge/the host hotel?
Yes! If you would like to be Workshop participant but choose to stay elsewhere you can join us for $4,495.
You will be included in all meals (except breakfast) and the entire rest of the workshop.
What airport should I fly in to?
You will fly in to Queenstown International airport and check into the hotel on November 7th. You will check out on November 13th. We will manage all transportation details for you, and all costs are included.
What is the cancellation policy?
Due to the nature of the workshop we are unable to offer refunds. However, if there is an emergency. and you absolutely must cancel, we will do our best to fill your spot, but with no guarantees. If we are able to do so, we’re happy to refund your money, minus a fee of $500 and any other fees that the Hotel charges. However, once final reservations are made 60 days in advance, there is no refund or ability to change your reservation to someone else.
Will I be able to enjoy alcoholic beverages at the workshop?
There is an immensely picturesque lounge and bar area at Kamana with full wine, beer and liquor menus. All alcohol must be purchased separately.495
